Live A Little!

“You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, love like you’ll never be hurt, sing like there’s nobody listening, and live like it’s heaven on earth.” ― William W. Purkey

This is one of my favorite quotes. I try to live by this, it helps me remember that I am not a robot, I can relax and have fun. I really enjoy life and hope that I can spread joy to others.

How to Strengthen Your Willpower

I was recently talking to a friend of mine, and they wanted to know how I keep my strength and willpower. I laughed out loud; the reason why is because i didn’t feel that this stood out as much. However, I found it very pleasing to hear that… and it was a compliment that was well accepted. I continued to tell my friend that I was able to earn a way to keep myself motivated through a professor that I once had when I was going to college for my B.A. My professor taught me that I didn’t truly understand what willpower was at the time. The main things that should be practice are; finding your focus, eat for energy, peaceful rest, and plan ahead. This should be applied with all areas of life. So how do you strengthen your willpower? Simple, all you have to do is know that it is not a magical force we summon up only when we’re trying to do something like learn a new skill, diet, or workout. Instead, willpower is something we call on. This can be throughout the day every day. We are able to make decisions on things like “should I wear the black pants or the blue ones”. Just the other day I was able to tune out a phone conversation so I can focus on what I was doing; willpower is any act that requires self-control. My professor made me aware that the strongest time we can fine willpower is at the beginning of the day. I thought that was a bit odd but when I thought about it I could see this being true. We would have this stronger during the morning because your body’s energy is higher after a restful night of sleep. By the night time we are tired and our willpower will be weaker, we won’t want to do nothing but crawl in the bed and sleep. Struggling to resist temptations like eating, surfing the Web, spending money and etc. really takes a lot out of you; leaving us physically and emotionally drained. According to Kelly McGonigal PhD, a health psychologist at Stanford University and the author of The Willpower Instinct; said that “The brain uses more energy to curb your impulses than it does to perform other mental tasks.”

Here are some smart techniques for doing just that.

Find your focus.

If you need to find your focus at work or at home use earplugs or finding a room that you can close out noise in. Another idea would be turning off your cell phone ringer and silencing e-mail notifications.

Eat for energy.

The more often you consume good-for-you food, the more willpower you’ll have. Studies have shown that people whose blood sugar (aka glucose) is elevated to a healthy level, as it is after regular meals, have more self-control and can more easily resist junk food. “When your blood sugar is low, it’s harder to control your impulses,” McGonigal says. Need an immediate willpower boost? “Some baby carrots or a handful of raisins will do the trick.  These foods are naturally high in sugar and will raise your glucose supply almost instantly, helping fuel your brain. To keep yourself willpowered all day, eat healthy meals or snacks every four hours. Choose foods that have a combo of protein, fiber, and complex carbs, like a salad with tofu, nuts, spinach, and tomatoes, or Greek yogurt with fruit.

Plan ahead.

This one is the most important, when you cut down on the number of decisions you have to make every day; your willpower muscle will automatically get stronger.  This is very true; here recently I have been faced with a lot of decision making I can find the willpower to get through what I need to do. As soon as I planned a way to tackle the many task that I needed to decide on I was able to see that it was easier to focus and I didn’t feel as tired. So reducing the number of choices you have to make in any 24-hour period is healthier. Image

Why I am thankful?

It is so great to spend such a wonderful day with your family. See people that you don’t get to see on a regular basis and have a grand slam time with the traditional ways of thanksgiving. On the other hand like most people, we can lose sight of what Thanksgiving stands for. I was talking with some family members and friends today on the subject. I had come to the realization that the youth today have not been taught on the importance on learning why we celebrate this holiday. We have been celebrating this American of holiday for many, many, many years; it is an autumnal ritual that can seem to be fixed in the thoughts as honoring the goodness and perseverance of the nation’s initial arrival during the colonial days. I assumed that children of today were learning this. However, I have often questioned what the origins of our American tradition, during that time? Through my own research I was able to find out that Thanksgiving celebrations are more directly traced to European refugees whom would offer prayers for their survival. This newly found information changed the whole idea I had, which was that the pilgrims and Indians were able to meet eye to eye and shared a meal. Perhaps the idea of an annual event to honor the survival European refugees would be good to point out as the holiday approaches in family homes and the schools that our youth attends. Many people that are younger than I am would be able to associate the first Thanksgiving with a better understanding that Thanksgiving is not about a fest of just eating and travel. Because of the settlement that these European refugees settled around Virginia, were able to be here before the pilgrims, they were unable to become friends with the Indians; they were wiped out by them in a massacre. If this had not taken place, these first practitioners would have been around before the Pilgrims landed far to the north of them near Plymouth Rock. This event crated a chain of events and changed how we have come to know the truth we have been told. It is only when we become adults that we can learn the whole truth that leads us to our own understanding of what traditions that we carry on. Thus, mostly all of us have come to know it was the Pilgrims who became known as the originators of Thanksgiving, this new information has enlighten me to a better understanding. I was able to enlighten my family and friends with information that they didn’t know. They felt even more thankful then they had before and the prayer that we said around the table became a stronger purpose of requesting guidance, assistance, and expresses one’s thoughts and emotions. I am thankful that I was able to learn this information, my family and friends, and the food that I am able to eat every day. So what are you thankful for?

Media Violence Is No Problem

“In one of my classes I had to research the findings that children and adolescents were not affected by the media. It was interesting to discover what I was able to find with scholarly research but it was fun to debate this subject. I loved what I wrote so much that I wanted to share my findings on what I had learned”.

The effects of Entertainment violence and children can vary according to the child. There is a mixture of effects, both physical and psychological that can occur. First of all, through a child’s years of watching television, could develop the concept that violence is a way to solve problems. But if the parent is not taking out the time to teach the child right from wrong and using the television or as I like to call it, the boredom box, as a source to be a baby sitter. Then the child will have more time to interact with reality. Many studies have established that a single parent often raises aggressive children. Single parents are often connected with neighborhood type, which is another issue in predicting childhood aggression. This is because single parents are more probable to live in less advantaged neighborhoods.

My interview with a parent that works for a television company and wanted to stay unknown in this report stated that “entertainment can’t be the blame for the aggression behavior found in children who obviously can’t tell the difference between fiction and real life. If there is anyone that should take the blame, it is the unskilled parents of these kids who obviously didn’t give them enough guidance”.  An old friend of mine grew up with me in my neighborhood; we did just about everything you can think of. We wasn’t into a lot of entertainment such as music, TV, and video games, we enjoyed hanging outside and doing our cheers and ECT. But she began hanging with some older kids and started using drugs and drinking alcohol at the age of thirteen, by the age fifteen she was locked up for psychiatric treatment. This is an obvious signs of a troubled teen. Now, that I am older, I understand better that she suffered with being misguided; hanging with the wrong crowds of people that were into doing drugs which helped her become more aggressive than what she was. She was a tat aggressive growing up. The entertainment industry was not the cause of her lack of will power. She was taught about drugs just as I was taught about drugs, but she had a problem with peer pressure. Wanting to belong to something and wanting to be notice.

Violence and aggression were present in people long before they watched a movie like “SAW”. They don’t just wake up one morning and decide to commit a murder or act in a violent way, because they saw this movie, what about other movies,TV shows, music and etc. that were watch before this one those more in like had some aggressive behavior which was acted out as a public display of some sort. The consideration that someone could be legally accountable for the immoral behavior of someone who may have seen a film, played a video game, or watched at TV show is absurd. They must take credit for their own actions. Peer pressure can influence a person to start smoking, drinking, or doing drugs and other things that are harmful to his/her body. Peer pressure can be a struggle for some people because they may be depressed by what they have done or what people done to hurt their feelings in the past. Peer pressure can make a person feel really bad about them selves. The reality is many variables go into a child committing an act of violence and to say that a film, video games, or TV shows are the leaders among them is ridiculous. Sadly, for a child, they are usually influenced by a combination of things like a hostile environment, parental neglect or abuse, and impaired mental state. It is frequently that we hear about a disturbed and crazy serial killer born with a mental flaw or abusive, domineering parents. Children who commit gang violence are often from poor neighborhoods. And also, the students, that treat other students, like they are social outcasts. This is obvious, that their parents had a little to no influence in their lives.

There are also many shows that help children improve their skills. For example, Arthur, Crash Box (on HBO family), the magic cellar, and Sesame Street, all of these and more, it teaches kids how to think logically, and also helps with reading and writing. There are many other shows like this that are focused to help kids. And with movies like “Lion King” which teach you how to be brave and the cycle of life “Nanny McPhee” which teaches you morals and respect for other, and the “Bee Movie” which teaches you about how the economy work and the importance bees have in our world  these movie don’t leave a bad impression on the youths mind. and last but not least we have video game such as fun brain which teaches you how to think faster and remember longer, civilization revolution which teaches you about discovering history and great leaders around the world that lead world wide countries, Pet Vet which teaches you that it is important to take care of animals, and Monopoly Tycoon which teaches you how to manage money and your business. Many people think that television has a negative effect on the children’s education. Nevertheless, I know that television is a tool of education for children. It helped me a lot and is still helping me right now. I feel that it is the responsibilities of the parents to control what their children are watching. Maybe some of these children act aggressively because they have seen violence in their home and not on television. there are many other factors that should be evaluated before making an assumption that all media is the blame for the child’s public display of aggression. I think that television has the most influence on children, more than anything else. There has not been any evidence that television affects the education of children.

Finally, the violence and aggression that is displayed in our world of entertainment has become my generation and generations to come conversed debate. My question is it just an insanity plea for people that want to give the impression of being as much like victims as the people they harm. Censoring or prohibiting video games will not solve or even help a problem that is much more deeply rooted. Violence in the media does not cause aggressive behavior. Teenagers and children should have responsibility for their own actions. The effects of entertainment violence in teenagers and children can vary according to the adolescent. There is a mixture of effects, both physical and psychological that can occur. The consideration that someone could be legally accountable for the immoral behavior of someone who may have seen a film, played a video game, or watched a TV show is absurd. As individuals we have free will to watch or listen to what ever we want; but because we have of pro-social behavior on TV, adolescents can chose what to imitate. The research shown, does not show that violent children like violent games and are also, incidentally, more likely to be violent. The rate of violence and aggression in adolescents; that is displayed in our world, stems from coaching generation after generation how to be angry. There has not been any evidence that media affects the education and morals of children.

Prayer In School

I was talking to a older lady that feels very strongly about prayer in the the school system and that it should be reintroduced to improve the behavior of children. I have an open mind to how things are in our society and think that in order to embrace understanding of something you have to see it from all angles. People have identities and their beliefs that will always be different from the next person; we just don’t all think or feel the same way about everything. I think that is good that we don’t it would be a very boring life to live in. However her thoughts and views did get me to thinking.

Morals-ethics150 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

As I think about the topic “prayer in public school” I ask myself, what do I really think about this subject? There was one time that all schools practiced religion in school and over time we began to get more and more people that would come from overseas and their beliefs were different. Of course after so long the government said that they would remove it and they did but prayer was still an issues and then they did away with that as well and in place put a moment of silence, this way kids could still pray if they choose to without offending anyone else. So my question is what did they do with this issue? or did they just made it quite.  I think this was a bit of an ingenious plan because there was no great deal of a conflict in our very growing diverse society. So are we fearful of other religions or people’s feelings?

Morality (Photo credit: dietmut)

When you look at it what is prayer really going to change in the kids performance in the public school, from what I can gather is that prayer can promote more moral living and may have a positive impact on student behavior in schools, it can be very encouraging to students to think more of their follow classmates then of themselves, giving them more reason to show thankfulness, compassion, harmony, a positive attitude and understanding, it can also help students to respect themselves and teachers, parents, school administration and community leaders and other students. These are very good points that I have really evaluated in my time with deduction on the pros and cons. The pros have out wade the cons for me. It comes down to this for me that it is more so the decline of morals is the biggest problem for people that are a Christian faith religion compared to a person that is a Buddhist or  a Atheist faith religion. We all want to blame something else for our short comings. They have noticed that the divorce rates, teen pregnancy, violent crime, and drug use have all increased, but how has this all happened because of only prayer in public school they could not be the stem for all of these things to have the decline of morality because of children not being able to pray, or could it? I for one disagree. The parents at home have to teach their children morals and values.

In our routines, each and every one of us feels that we must strive in being the best that we are able of being on an everyday basis. We all seem to aim for similar goals, and try to practice the morals that we have been taught the methods we perform are exceptional. Some people follow religious outlines to seek a level of moral excellence, others just pursue different approaches that will give them a close exceptional performance of morals. Which brings me to my point existentialism a philosophical theory of life, it is complex but I feel this fits with my topic at hand. Moral individualism, freedom of choice, responsibility and alienation; these are the thing that are just what is going on with this issue for people. There are people that feel very strongly about having public school put prayer back into the school system, I can see how they feel this is the only way for humanity to attain stability in what we are declining in with divorce, teen pregnancy, violent crime, and drug use. Everyone must imitate the Almighty’s perfect profile. There is a basic philosophy by Aristotle; he deduces that humanity strives for an identical peak of moral excellence. Next to moral individualism, the predictability of choice is the most prominent existentialist theory. It is the person’s choice rather or not if they want to partake in having their child attend a school that do not share their moral beliefs. This is where there are other options for the child and where he or she attends school at. It is also the parent’s choice in how they teach their child morals or not.  Existentialism suggests that individuals must choose their way in understanding their own morals. People must set their own ethical standards. Neither a government nor the universe can predetermine moral rules. Each person strives toward a unique moral perfection.

choice and context

choice and context (Photo credit: Will Lion)

It is our choices to determine who we are. It states in the text “Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself.”(Chaffee, 48) if a man has no morals then this is what he believes to be true and he will teach his child or children the same. So is it wrong for him to not want his child or children to pray in school if it is not his belief? There was another passage I came across that stated “For those who decide to think in limited and myopic ways, to run from their freedom and responsibility, to make choices with only their own selfish needs in mind—these people are living inauthentic lives of diminished value.” (Chaffee, 55) freedom is where mankind is open to a future that is determined by choice and action. Each person decides for himself how to live life. We cannot force people to teach their children one way of morals. If that is the case, it wouldn’t be freedom to choice now would it? Which would mean that no individual would have freedom.

Super Moon

images (1)

A super moon is a new moon with the closest approach the moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. My son and I was able to see this super moon while we were bike riding on June 23, 2013, we went back to the house and got our cameras.

Through our research we found out that this super moon happens more than we knew, the next siting will be August 10, 2014. The super moon was bigger and brighter than we had seen all year, it was noticeable as it was raising in the sky but once it reach a certain height it was not as noticeable in size, but in brightness.  My son made a joke about the werewolves were probably going nuts right now, they would have to be stronger since the moon was bigger and brighter. Then he says:

Son:    Knock, knock!

Mom:  Who’s there?

Son:    Werewolf.

Mom:  Werewolf who?

Son:    Werewolf I be without you?

We could only wish that we could have seen it on the horizon, I know it would hold up to its name and appear “super”. Maybe next year!

The Depth Of Words

English: Cobbe portrait, claimed to be a portrait of William Shakespeare done while he was alive Lëtzebuergesch: Uelegporträt vum William Shakespeare am Alter vu 46 Joer, gemoolt 1610 zu Liefzäite vum Dichter, haut am Besëtz vum Konschtrestaurator Alec Cobbe. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I have been reading William Shakespeare and how he was a wonderful play writer,  he was well known for a lot of plays that he had written over time. Shakespeare was also a good writer with long narrative poems and the lyric. I like the poem that he wrote sonnet 116.this poem spoke to me more than the others it the world literature book, on page 1446. Who was Shakespeare he was a man that was filled with love and the expression of it. He could tap into human emotions and summarize it with words that no other could do. Shakespeare is one of my favorite poets, he has taught me how to really love another and express to my husband on a more intimate level. I have learnt what it means to grow old and still be in love with the man I have married, but I hope to experience one day in my life time.

This poem that I have read has a positive outlook on life and love to me. The message is straightforward. If a person discovers an obstacle or a spoken word that can be restricting his relationship with another person, he should not change or modify his love for that person. On the other hand, his love should continue to be unchanging and continuous, like the sun that nourishes the earth. Love is meant to work through life’s sticky situations good and bad, happy and sad. In account to his love, it should remain strong and enriched throughout life, though their youth and old age. All of Shakespeare’s writings are beautiful with an endless message to be learnt from. His writings remain popular because of their complexity. Look at us today we use Shakespeare’s writings for movies, TV shows, and plays; there is still an impact with those powerful words of feelings that he expressed on paper in our daily lives.

In the book I am reading World Literature the poem goes:
Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle’s compass come:

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom…..

If this be error and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

I believe that it is amazing to see, know or even have such a bond with another person that is platonically, mentally and emotionally strong, it would not allow problems, personal flaws, etc. to come in between the relationship. Love is not love if problems, personal hang-ups, etc. these things can separate them. Faithfulness of real love during times of difficulties, strengthens and creates a loyal structure. This kind of love is to continuous. We all deserve a love like this in our life time!
